On the path
of Saint Martin
Celebrated throughout the Veneto region on November 11th, Saint Martin’s day has given rise to many popular traditions, idioms and poems. Although some of these traditions have disappeared, others still endure today. They are all closely linked to autumn, the season when the Saint is celebrated.
The Via Sancti Martini
Certificated as a “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” in 2005
Saint Martin of Tours is one of the most widely known and recognisable Christian saints, venerated since the fourth century. Through his journeys across Europe, the Saint left a significant imprint on the collective memory of our continent a legacy that lives on today in the folk traditions and local festivals.
For this reason, the Council of Europe designated the trail leading from Szombathely in Hungary (his birthplace) to Tours in France (where his remains rest) as a «European Cultural Route».
